Troubleshooting Platespin P2V migrations

This post by Marcel van den Berg just saved my sanity today since I could not make heads or tails of what my beloved Platespin server was trying to tell me:

Preparing <servername> (under PlateSpin control) For Synchronization

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:5036

Description:

several one time synchronizations jobs fails at Step 3 “Take control of virtual machine”. Before this kind of job performed well.

Solution:

reboot the Platespin server and re-run the job. It will most likely run successfully.

Platespin: the Cadillac of physical-to-virtual migrations (or Porsche, or WRX STi, what have you) but decidedly not the best-documented solution on the planet. You’ll find that the errors that are thrown link you to expired or nonexistent knowledge base articles…

Glad I could help you ;-)

Typically, if you create an account and login to http://support.platespin.com/kb2, the links will be active. Otherwise, the KB at support.novell.com contains all previous articles.

Couple of problems there, Michael – That KB site does not work with Google Chrome (not a huge deal). Searching for something like the following string brings up nothing:

    System.ArgumentNullException

That search also brings up nothing at the support.novell.com site. Finally, I remember having to contact Novell support directly to even get a login to the older Platespin KB site.

So I’m at another impasse with trying to discover a server prior to this coming weekend and cannot. Nor can I search for any KB article since that exact phrase that the Platespin server itself has given me to search for is not found (or at least easily found, and I don’t care to spend a lot of time looking for it).

Like I’ve mentioned: I love the product and it’s made my life a lot easier, but when things do break or jobs fail, easily-accessed info is almost nonexistent.

I agree with Mike! I’ve been working with PlateSpin for a long time and quite intensively. Generally, I’m very satisfied with the product, but the online knowledge base is terrible.
